This story is about 3 friends, Rancho, Farhan Qureshi, and Raju Rastogi, who are studying in one of the best engineering colleges of India. They are complete opposites and come from completely different walks of life. The essence of the story is the friendship they share, and how they always have each others’ backs. Rancho saves Raju’s life when he tries to commit suicide and he also helps Farhan realize his dreams and finally live up to them. Towards the end, when it’s time for them to look for Rancho and help him, they leave everything behind and go across the country, even putting their lives at stake to look for them. Moments of their friendship makes you teary eyed, and completely touches the heart.

Jenna and Matt were best friends in high school. As a result of Jenna caring more about being popular than hanging with Matt, they slowly stopped being friends; Jenna, however, does not remember this happening when she suddenly becomes thirty after wishing to be thirty at her 13th birthday party. Jenna seeks Matt’s help when she needs to figure out what happened from ages 13-30. After hanging out a lot, Matt and Jenna start becoming as close as they used to be. They start doing things they used to as kids, such as eating razzles and saying goodbye in different languages. I think Jenna and Matt are an important example because it shows that no matter how much time goes by people can get their friendships back. This relates to our class discussions of friendships in high school and if they can withstand the test of time. I chose this text because 13 going on 30 is one of my favorite movies. Ever since I was young, I’ve aspired to have a friendship like Jenna and Matt’s.

In this episode of Boy Meets World. Cory and Shawn are in conflict over a girl. Shawn’s girlfriend has one condition to their relationship, and that is that he can no longer see Cory. Although, Cory and Shawn continue to meet in private, so that Shawn may continue to see his girlfriend, in the end Shawn chooses to end his relationship. Shawn says that no girl is worth compromising his friendship with his best friend. This text interested me because it demonstrates the strength of friendships, and the value of loyalty that comes with them.

This painting by modern impressionistic artist Leonid Afremov is a fantastic, colorful representation of friendship. Afremov only used a palette knife and natural oils for the painting. The painting shows a man walking on the street accompanied by his dog, who is assumed to be his friend. I chose this painting because it is an imaginative and vibrant representation of friendship. Also, this was of interest to me personally because it shows the friendship between a human and an animal; I find this to be particularly interesting because I’ve read some books that stressed friendship is only possible among men.

I absolutely love it. I’ve always felt that the power of love and friendship can transform something that is dull and monotonous into something that is vibrant and fascinating. This picture really embodies that. It also reminds me of “Loyal Dog, Capitán, Sits By Owner’s Grave For Six Years,” by Sarah Medina. This is my favourite example of a human-animal friendship, as well as my favourite example of what death can mean for a friendship. What I find particularly incredible is that the even dog was never taken to the funeral, he found his master’s grave by himself!  — Aakash

Another great literary piece of the 20th century, Tuesdays with Morrie is a non-fictional account of a newpaper columinst time spent with his former college prefessor. It may not seem like a work of friendship literature, but the friendship that Morrie Shwartz and Mitch Albom shared was one of the mentor and student. A rather under-appreciated form of friendship the student and the mentor are in most ways friends. The secrets shared, the advice given, the admiration given are all the same in friendships and mentor/student relationships. Tuesdays with Morrie shows that a mentor can be a friend just as much if not more than a peer can.

The lyrics to the song are about kids growing up in a suburban town, the way they make friends, the way they grow, and the way their friendships end when they leave the suburbs to go on with their lives. This text is important to our classroom canon because a lot of friendships end this way. I personally have experienced this when I moved from my home town of The Woodlands, Texas, and again when I moved from Panama to go to Emory. Once you move away from your friends, you stop sharing experiences with them. Due to the fact that you no longer share experiences together and that your friendship was relatively young, caused it to die.

I chose Aristotle’s Nicomachean Ethics because of his remarkable views on friendship. According to Aristotelian philosophy, only virtuous men can be friends. Friendship between non-virtuous men, women, and animals are impossible. He lays down quite rigid and unattainable requirements for friendship. I find his philosophy interesting because I find different perspectives to be enlightening. This text is important for the class because we should consider the difference of friendships in ancient times and in modern times. One statement from the book that stands out to me is, “A friend to all is a friend to none.”

The Avengers is also a great friendship piece. In this movie superhero’s from completely different backgrounds come together to save the world. Although they do not start off as friends, as the movie goes on, they get closer and closer together. By the end, the friends are all vacationing together. I like this movie because it shows how friendships can grow out of nothing and become something that is unexpectedly strong.

These lyrics are important and belong in the classroom canon because it shows how a good friend can make any poor situation better, something that should occur in any good friendship. Based on what we have discussed in class in the recent weeks, one quality that all close friendships should have is that one of the friends should be able to comfort and help their friend in a time of need.

The song “Guy Love” was originally written for an episode of the comedy sitcom Scrubs. J.D. (Zach Braff) and Turk (Donald Faison) express their love for one another through the eyes of a patient who due to a deadly aneurism can only hear in song. The song itself truly expresses what it means to have a purely platonic heterosexual partnership in rather comical lyrics. More importantly and the reason why I chose this song for the anthology is that Zach and Donald are truly expressing their feelings for each other. The actors friendship extends beyond the show. Zach was even Donald best man at his wedding. The song is not only a true representation of the bromance but it is song by two people who truly understand what “Guy Love” means.

An amazing film about five teenagers who end up spending a Saturday together in detention, which turns out to be a life changing experience. I feel like the film deals with the complexities in the friendships of teenagers. To them life seems the hardest when in high school. It celebrates the importance and benefits of having friends in your life. It shows that friendship can develop between any two people no matter how different they are.

This is about the friendship of Jess Aarons and Leslie, who build a bridge across a creek to an unknown place, which they name Terabithia. This is like an escape from the world for them, and they spend their best moments together. When one day Leslie dies while crossing the bridge, he realizes not just what he has lost, but also what he has gained from having had a friend like her. He is a changed person and has inculcated many of her traits from their friendship.

I chose this picture as the last text for my collection because of what it implies. The caption in the picture implies that friends always get along. This is of personal interest to me as I’ve always wondered whether friends get along or is it possible to be friends while arguing frequently, or even most of the time. The idea of friends getting along is something we take granted for in society and never question it. I think it’ll be interesting for us to investigate this. The picture can be found here.

Bert and Ernie’s relationship is a great example of two friends who learn from one another. When one has an idea, the other challenges it. I believe this pair is important because they are the exemplum of friendship. Their differences result in their bringing out the best in one another. Bert is the more practical friend, while Ernie is the friend who has silly ideas. I find this text interesting because it relates to our discussion about how friends can make fun of another, which is an example of how close they are. Bert and Ernie are constantly making fun of one another, but it is out of love. In addition, the two are an iconic pair. Sesame Street has been around for decades, teaching children the value of friendship. I grew up with Bert and Ernie as an model of friendship.

This classic song is about two friends who put off their work to go fishing together, simply “leaving a sign on the door” saying “gone fishin’.” This duet is relaxing because it shows that even big shots – like Bing Crosby and Louis Armstrong – take time off to slow down and enjoy the simple things in life together. Between lyrics, they exchange friendly conversation and incorporate it into the song, giving the impression that they are not just performing music. They are singing together for leisure, and to enjoy each other’s company. It is the perfect tune to play when you and a friend need to relax and unwind, especially after a long week.

The prince travels to different planets and befriends all manner of strange folk, even travelling to Earth and befriending a fox by taming it in a touching passage on the beginnings of friendship. The story is indeed a sad one at some points, but it is also a beautiful story about adventure, friendship and love.

This one diverges somewhat from the ones above given that it is extremely violent and profane; hardly a children’s read. However, if you’re not easily offended, the friendship between the main character, Rev. Jesse Custer, and the vampire Cassidy is an extremely interesting one. They are sort of a comic-book ass kicking duo, but more than that they are two good friends whose relationship undergoes some serious bumps. Considering the catastrophe surrounding them, it is a miracle they mend the rifts that occur between them. Very interesting read if you don’t mind the violence, sex, vulgarity and downright disturbing parts.

American coming of age comedy Ferris Bueller’s Day Off is about high school senior Ferris Bueller who decides to skip school. Ferris, his best friend Cameron Frye, and his girlfriend Jeanie spend the day running around Chicago and hiding from their Principal Edward Rooney. In the film Ferris states he is worried for Cameron. He also says he in fact took the day off for Cameron, because he has a lot to do before he graduates and he’s wound up to tight. During the progression of the movie you can see that Cameron when in the presence of his best friend loosened up. Some may argue with this choice as an example of a friendship text, because some believe that Ferris is just using Cameron for his own selfish gains, but anyone watching the movie paying close attention to Cameron will know that he and Ferris have a connection like not many other.

Finding Nemo is a movie about a fish named Marlin who has a fish son named Nemo. Nemo gets captured by divers and is taken up to shore. During the course of the whole movie Marlin searches high and low to find his son. Along the way he meets a friend named Dory. Even though in the beginning he can’t stand her, she proves to be a good friend in the end. This movie shows that best friends can come in the most unexpected places.

It is not a secret that Foo Fighters front man, Dave Grohl, was the drummer for Nirvana. Perhaps a more controversial secret is that Foo Fighters song “My Hero” is a tribute to Nirvana front man, Kurt Cobain. Dave Grohl once said about Kurt’s unfortunate death “It was probably the worst thing that has happened to me in my life. I remember the day after that I woke up and I was heartbroken that he was gone. I just felt like ‘okay, so I get to wake up today and have another day and he doesn’t.” Lyrics to the the chorus which says “there goes my hero, watch him as he goes. There goes my hero, he’s ordinary” and “kudos to my hero leaving all the best.” Without a doubt Grohl and Cobain were friends, but this song shows Grohl looked up to Cobain. Not only that, but in this and other songs by Grohl you can see he was truly affected by the death of his friend.

Bubba and Forrest are so similar even though they are from completely different backgrounds. When they go off to war together Bubba and Forrest plan to have a shrimping company when they come back home. Bubba is shot during the war and Forrest does everything in his power to save him even if that means running back into the warzone. Unfortunately, Bubba dies at war and Forrest is crushed but he keeps his promise to Bubba and creates the shrimp company. Forrest is an example of a truly good friend because even after his friend dies he keeps his legacy alive. Forrest and Bubba were also friends of a separate race. Their friendship stood strong even though it wasn’t socially acceptable for whites and blacks to be such good friends at the time.

Marley & Me is a book written by John Grogan that was later turned into a movie starring Owen Wilson and Jennifer Aniston. This book is a special source for me about friendship because it tells the story of a man and his yellow lab. My yellow lab Chelsea was my best friend growing up and there are many tough times that I don’t think I would have been able to get through without her. The lesson that this movie taught me is that a friend does not always have to be a human, a friend is simply someone who makes you feel happy, loved, and safe.

I believe the song “True Friend” by Hannah Montana is a good example of a friendship text. The Show Hannah Montana embodies the values of friendship that we have discussed in class this semester. She goes through a lot with her two best friends Lily and Oliver. No matter what, Miley can always count on her two best friends to have her back. In the song True Friend, Hannah (Miley’s alter ego) shares characteristics of a True Friend. She describes a true friend as someone who ”hang{s} on through the ups and the downs cause they’ve got someone to believe in.” Hannah Montana was one of my favorite shows growing up. My good friends and I always watched the show together and on occasion send one another songs from the show. One of my best friends and I always send one another this song when we miss one another.

My best friend and I used to also send the song “True Friend” to each other when we missed one another! Such a great friendship song. — Marissa

The Golden Girls is about four women, (Blanche, Dorothy, Sophia, and Rose), who all live together in Miami, Florida. As their lives take unexpected turns they are all brought together under the same roof. As the season progress viewers are able to see how their friendship grows. Viewers are able to see how four strangers become four inseparable best friends as time goes on. The girls go through their share or good and bad times but in the end they come out stronger for it.

In all of the Harry Potter movies, the friendship that exists between Harry, Hermione, and Ron plays an important part of the story. The thing that I noticed most about their friendship, however, is the loyalty they have for one another. In ever movie, just as Harry is about to leave for his big, life-threatening adventure, he turns to his friends Hermione and Ron and tells them that he has to leave and they cannot come with him. In response, Hermione and Ron always make some kind of statement with the general message of, “You’re being ridiculous. Of course we’re coming. We aren’t going to let you go alone.” I believe this accurately illustrates the bonds that friendship creates between people. The idea that friends always have each other’s backs, even in the face of danger or death, is an important thing to consider. Additionally, the idea that one friend would rather face death alone than put his friends in danger should be touched upon.

This is the first book/film of the series and marks the beginning of a great friendship. As they are the first to meet they become very close best friends. They do everything together, and are always helping and saving each other. The most important part of the story is when Ron sacrifices his life in the game of chess so that Harry could continue his quest. Thus, the essence of sacrifice in a friendship is highlighted in the book.

Kermit and Fozzie Bear are two friends who do everything together. Fozzie Bear,who is very silly and sometimes gets himself into trouble, is unlike Kermit, who is more of a leader. Together, the two make the perfect pair. I believe Kermit and Fozzie Bear are an important example because they show how friends can bring out the best in each other. I believe this is an important friendship text because these two have been an example of friendship for over forty years. Both my mom and I grew up watching the Muppets.

Although this movie may seem kind of cheesy, I also think it is a good friendship piece. Throughout the movies, friendships form between the most unlikely of people. Although in the first movie it seems as though no one will be friends with people outside of their social group, this is not so. I like this movie because it challenges social norms. Corey and Shawn are a dynamic duo. While both Corey and Shawn used to get into trouble together, their interests diverged as they grew older. Shawn became popular and more into girls, yet he still maintained his friendship with Corey. When Shawn’s parents abandoned him, he lived with Corey and his family for a period of time. These boys grew up together, which makes their relationship so special. Their friendship is important to our class because while they may have changed as they got older, their friendship and deep caring for one another always kept them together. I watched Boy Meets World growing up and always found Corey and Shawn’s friendship both admirable and special.

Anthony Kiedis & Flea are an example of a lifelong friendship that has gone through hell and back. Flea constantly helps Anthony throughout his life and is like a brother to him. This text is important to our classroom canon because it is an example of a friendship which was created at a very young age that has flourished and become a professional and lifelong friendship. Anthony and Flea met in the 9th grade and were inseparable during high school. After they graduated, they became extremely interested into the local LA music scene and opted to not go to college. They went on to form The Red Hot Chili Peppers and continue to work together for the rest of their lives.

Rugrats is a show about four best friends(Phil, Lil, Tommy, and Chuckie) who also happen to be babies. This show follows the lives and adventures the babies as the navigate the adult world. Each episode comes with a new adventure and a new way for the babies to be dupe the adults in the process. Even though each baby has their own unique personalities they all seem to complement each other perfectly. They each hold one piece of the puzzle and without one of them the puzzle would be incomplete.

The relationship between Tommy and Chuckie is a great example of friendship. Although Tom and Chuckie are opposites they become the best of friends because of their support for one another. Whenever Tommy gets an idea for an adventure, Chuckie is right behind him even though he is afraid of his own shadow. As Told by Ginger is about three best friends trying to navigate there way around middle school. Whether it is boys, mean girls, or annoying parents, these three best friends are there for each other every step of the way. What makes this show so deep is the fact that even though it is a cartoon the characters have real issues that people of all ages can relate to. Ginger’s dad left her when she was young, Dodie’s mom is overly critical, Massie’s parents treat her like a baby which impedes her from being about to grow up. Even the characters that viewers love to hate have their share of problems as well. Each episode has an important life lessen that can be taken into everyday life.

Although Frog and Toad are very different, they always know how to cheer each other up. In the last chapter Toad is sad because he never gets mail so Frog sends him a simple letter and makes Toad’s day. In a friendship not only do the big things count (i.e. loyalty, trust, etc.) but the small things that friends do to show their appreciation for one another count even more. I think this is text is important because it teaches people how to appreciate the small things that are so significant to friendship.

This movie was great. I liked it because it was based off of a book by my favorite childhood author, Dr. Seuss. This movie also shows an unlikely friendship coming to be. Although the main character, Ted, first leaves town to find a tree, he finds much more. Although he did not expect it, he also found a friend, named the Once-ler. With the help of Ted, the Once-ler is able to fix his mistake. Because of the friendship between Ted and the Once-ler, they are able to work together to produce trees again.

I haven’t seen the Lorax movie, but the book is an outstanding and unique friendship text. The friendship between Ted and the Once-ler does not just revolve around the joy of being friends, rather it forms out of a mutual goal: to replant the truffula trees. The fact that this unlikely pair bonds over such an admirable goal – to save the dwindling trees from encroaching industry – is beautiful, but also teaches lessons of cooperation and environmental awareness to the children who see this (or read the book). — Kieran

This song by Bruno Mars was a hit, not only on the charts but also in our hearts. The song is about a friend telling his friend that he will always be there for her. The line “And if you ever forget how much you really mean to me, Every day I will remind you” just summarizes what true friendship is like; effortless, irrevocable and unconditional love. The main reason I chose this song, is because it was my batch song in high school and I think of all my friends when I hear it.

Life of Pi is a text that must be considered when discussing friendship in the modern era because of its excellent portrayal of an unusual and incredible friendship. In the beginning of the novel (and, movie,) Pi’s father warns him that tigers aren’t friends of humans. Throughout the novel, a friendship between Pi and Richard Parker (a Royal Bengal tiger) was built after a shipwreck in the Pacific Ocean. Although Pi is human, and Richard is a tiger, they create a special connection during those moments at the lifeboat. This text is important for us to consider to investigate how different sorts of friendships come about through different ways.

In this movie, Cady moves to a new school and becomes friends with Janis. After they become friends, Janis asks Cady to infiltrate a group of girls with which Janis wants to get revenge on. Cady agrees, which leads to consequences for Cady herself and to the end of Cady and Janis’s friendship. I think this is a good example of when friends ask each other for things that one friend should really not be asking another friend to do. The idea of boundaries within friendships should be discussed.

I think Mean Girls is in a rare class of movies. It was made in 2004, but it’s still completely relevant today.  There are few movies like it that it will seem relevant to the audience, no matter how old it is – just like the book that we read by Cicero.

I chose this particular episode from the immensely popular TV show How I Met Your Mother because of its general theme of friendship. Ted, the main character, is convinced to go to Philadelphia for the weekend by his friend Barney, who promises a “legendary” weekend for the two. The weekend ends up being rather disappointing, but Ted explains near the end that even though the weekend was disappointing, he could always count on Barney for a great time and their adventures always led to great stories that Ted could tell to others. This is personally interesting to me because it shows that regardless of what you get achieved with your friends, the journey is always a blast!

Mulan is another friendship piece. Throughout the movie, Mulan makes more and more friends, although her best friend would be Mushu. This movie is funny and it teaches about friendships. Mushu sticks with Mulan throughout all of the movies that they are in together. He is like her guide, and although she usually does not listen to him, he is still there for her. I admire this.

As a child Toy Story was the first movie I ever saw in theaters. Needless to say it has a very special place in my heart. “You’ve Got A Friend In Me” by Randy Newman is the iconic song from the soundtrack of that movie. It is written about a boy and his toys. Toys who will always be there for him, his friends forever and always. In the movie two of his toys go through hell and back just to get back to their owner Andy. Not much needs to be said about this song so I’ll leave you with a few lyrics. “When the road looks rough ahead and you’re miles and miles from your nice warm bed just remember what your old pal said.

This cheerful and upbeat song displays some great characteristics that accompany friendship. Although this song was written for a children’s movie it can apply to many different age groups. The song states that you will have a friend when the road is rough and far from home. This part of the song can be especially relatable us, being away from home at college. Further, the song also explains that friends share their troubles, which corresponds to previous themes we have discussed in class.

One part that is really interesting about this is this bit: “But none of them / Will ever love you / The way I do / It’s me and you, boy” This really brings up the debate about whether it is possible to have more than one best friend. This song clearly doesn’t think so. I believe that most of the texts that we have read in class (Cicero, 2NK, Frog & Toad, Winnie The Pooh etc.) share the same view.  — Aakash

This is a song that will be in the hearts and minds of teenagers for years to come. The famous song that first appeared as the theme song in Toy Story, and then went on to become the theme songs for its sequels, serves as an important way for children to get acquainted with the idea of friendship. These lines are particularly important for the theme of friendship: “As the years go by/ Our friendship will never die.” This text is significant for our class because we focused on children’s books that deal with friendship, so we should explore beyond books and study other mediums that speak to children on friendship.

“I Feel Home” is a song by O.A.R., one of my favorite bands. Although it is not directly about friendship, I think it is a good representation of how it feels to have a true friend. Whenever I am homesick or feeling sad, I go to my friends to make me laugh and feel like I am home. This feeling of “being home” is not only a literal thing, but it is also figurative. I think it is very important to find the people that bring you this feeling no matter where you are in the world and what is happening.

I like the connection you can make between this song and friendship. Being with your friends, especially if you haven’t seen them for a while, feels like you are coming back to reality. With your friends, everything seems real and there is no one else you’d rather be with. — Danetta

Bridge to Terabithia is a coming of age novel. It taught me that you’re best friend is someone who you feel you can be completely yourself around because it tells the story of a friend, Leslie, helping another friend, Jesse, ignore the pressures to conform as adolescents. While growing up I knew someone was a good friend when I felt like I didn’t need to try or change when I was around them. I was simply myself.

One of the most unique things about Bridge to Terabithia is that it revolves just as much around the loss of friendship, as it does on the friendship itself. I remember that we read a text in class that addressed the loss of friendship (The loss should not be used as an excuse to not attend a meeting? One should not use the loss as an excuse to be sad?) Do you know what I’m talking about or do I sound like a crazy person? I think it was Cicero… If not, it was Socrates.  Either way, this is a brilliant Friendship text.  — Aakash

I know exactly what you are talking about with the discussion of a loss of a friend. I believe it was Cicero. He said how when a friend died, you should not mourn their death, but celebrate their life and the memories you hold with them. I remember this so well because it is how I like to view death, and it is why I hate funerals. When I die, I hope my friend and family throw a party so rather than be upset, they can spend time together, be happy, and continue enjoying life while still holding on to my memory.  — Meghan

I’m glad I didn’t sound like a crazy person! Thanks! I really need to re-read Cicero.I would want the exact same thing! I like the way you think. It’s such a shame that most cultures still have such sombre funeral processions. I feel like post-funeral Irish wakes (they consist of drinking lots and sharing happy and fun stories about the deceased) are becoming a lot more common. But they are never really substituted for the actual funeral. I was crushed when my grandma passed away, but it’s really comforting to know that her passing brought so many people closer together and resulted in a lot of good. She was very solitary for her last few years, and that’s how I thought she was, but I was amazed to see how many people remembered her and loved her and were sad to see her go! It’s beautiful to see how someone’s death can result in friendships and bonds being made and repaired.  — Aakash

The story is about Charlie, who has no close friends or relatives, befriends Sam and Patrick. They support him and give him company through various stages. He is at first just a wallflower, who has face sexual assault as a child. As the story proceeds, we see him change as a person into a much bolder one. The importance of having friends is highlighted in this movie, as we see Charlie’s life completely, changing with him overcoming a major event of his life.

The TV show Psych should be considered for our classroom canon because it is another example of a friendship which was started young and survived. In the TV show, Gus and Shawn are two private detectives who are frequently hired due to the fact that they claim that Shawn is a psychic due to the fact that he is simply a really good detective. The show starts off with a flashback to Shawn and Gus as children, which later relates to the plot of the episode. This indicates that they had been friends for an extremely long time and spent so much time together to the point where they developed the same skill sets and later started their own private investigation team.

Another great example of the mentor/student relationship is the one in Star Wars. Anakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi are without debate friends. Sometimes it’s difficult to not see them as equals. This video clip of their battle in Star Wars III, marking the end of their friendship, is somehow one of the most beautiful examples of their friendship. There are many videos online in tribute to their friendship that show Anakin expressing how Obi-Wan is “the closest thing (he has) to a father” or showing Obi-Wan complementing Anakin and calling him old friend, but I felt the strongest and most emotional expression of their friendship is shown in their last battle. In this battle Obi-Wan admits to failing Anakin as a mentor and says that he was his brother. The anguish in both their faces is truly seen. In Cicero’s “On Friendship” Laelius says “Sometimes friendships must be broken. For young people’s personalities change.” Anakin’s personality changed drastically and this is perhaps one of the saddest broken friendships I know.

The relation that develops between Watson & Holmes becomes extremely personal due to the fact that they become friends over common interest and admiration of each other. I specifically use the BBC modern adaptation because it just portrays their friendship so well. This text is important to our classroom canon because it shows a professional or utility based friendship turn into much more deep friendship. “The Reichenbach Fall” is special because there is a scene in the episode when Holmes’s life is in danger, and he’s talking to Watson on the phone. Both of them are crying in the scene because they have become such good friends over the past few months through their passion of their own professions. It is an example of a friendship that was originally based on utility becoming something more.

We’ve all probably heard it because it is the theme song of the popular television show ‘Friends’. I love this song; it beautifully describes what friendship means to me. Friendship is a gift. The hardest things seem easier when you have someone standing by you. The best part is that this song was recorded and released in the 1990′s yet anyone who knows the lyrics would still relate to it. It shows that friendship means the same to people in every decade.

This television show follows the lives of doctors who all work together in the same hospital. Throughout the seasons, we see the relationships and friendships between the different characters grow and change. This show expresses the complications that arise when people who work together try to become friends. A main problem that often arises is how an authority member can be friends with a lower-level employee, and whether or not this is possible at all.

Grey’s Anatomy is basically a show about the lives of a group of surgeons working at Seattle Grace Hospital. The show is about the protagonist Meredith Grey and her life as a resident at the hospital. It shows her relationships with her neurosurgeon husband, Derek Shepherd and her best friend and confidant, Cristina Yang. What I adore about the show is the chemistry between Meredith and Christine. Being doctors they face life and death situations all the time, they do the maddest things, they talk to each other as if they’re enemies but in actuality they can die for each other! It’s the camaraderie that they both share that gets to the audience. They never divulge their secrets to anyone, they mean well and can go to any length to help each other get back on track while being, if I may, “bitches” to each other!

This text is important to us because the friendship between Seth & Evan is an example of a friendship that started off as a childhood friendship which continued to grow. What makes it really important is that they are afraid that their friendship is going to end because high school is nearing its end. This is an extremely valid fear which most of us experienced during that time period, and the truth is that not many friendships will actually outlast that period. The movie ends with them telling each other how much they love each other and how even though that they’re not going to the same college, they will still be friends.

This title translates to ‘I found someone.’ This was an Indian version of the movie E.T. In this movie, Rohit is a mentally unstable boy who’s father was a scientist. He died in an accident and all his dreams of contacting aliens came to an end. However Rohit sees a UFO one day and befriends Jadoo, an alien. Jadoo uses his powers to cure Rohit. When the government finds out about Jadoo, they try to capture him and decide to put him in a laboratory. Rohit cannot let this happen to Jadoo and risks his life in order to save him from the authority and finaly manages to send him back to his planet.

Ron and Hermione go with Harry on all of his journeys knowing very well that they could possibly die but they are willing to do it because they are best friends and they sacrifice themselves for each other many times.

The Harry Potter texts are AMAZING!!! J.K.Rowling is a phenomenal writer! She got me interested in magic at a very young age also! I think these texts definitely show the ups and downs friendship. In the fourth Harry Potter book the friendship between Harry and Ron is put to the test. In this novel, Ron choses not to believe Harry when he tells Ron that he did not enter his name into the Goblet. This leads the two to go on not talking or associating for weeks. However, the two seem to be lost without each other. I chose this text because it shows that friendship cannot occur without trust, it also shows that downfall that is caused when one friend is jealous of another.

I believe that Harry Potter movies show a great deal of friendship. Not only is Harry friends with Ron Weasly and Hermione Granger, he is also friends with many other characters in the movies. If those aren’t true friends, I do not know what are.

What can I say about Harry Potter. J K Rowling is genius! She’s the reason why people all around the word believe in magic. I too believe in magic! The friendship between Harry, Ron and Hermoine is beautiful. But the one relationship that really stands out for me, is the one between Snape and Harry’s mother, Lily. He loved her unconditionally; he could do anything for her. She was his closest friend, ‘Always’.

While Serena and Blair’s relationship changes throughout the series, varying from enemies to sisters, they always end up best friends in the end. Their understanding of one another and true love for one another allows them to overcome whatever fights they may have. I believe their relationship is important because it shows that true friends can overcome the hardest obstacles, a testament to their relationship. Gossip Girl is one of my favorite shows. My best friends from home and I always watched the show together. While the show can get a little ridiculous, I have always remained a loyal fan.

This story is about the assassination of Julius Caesar by his dearest friend, which is then avenged by Mark Antony. The importance of the text is the friendship of Mark Antony and Julius Caesar, which become evident after the assassination. The part that greatly touched my heart was the fact that Mark Antony fought for his friend, putting his life at stake even though he knew that everyone would be against him at that time. This is unlike most friendships we have read about.

They have proven to each other and viewers that no matter how much people want to keep them quiet they won’t stop until they find out what happened the night Allison went missing.

This is a really sad one, but definitely worth studying. A young boy always goes to his favorite tree to climb it and eat its apples. Both the boy and the tree are happy with this relationship, as the tree enjoys making the boy happy. However, as time goes on, the boy demands more and more from the tree and the tree keeps on giving out of kindness, eventually running out of things to give the boy. I can’t do it justice in a plot synopsis, because the real feeling that you get when reading the book is one that you’ll remember forever.

Although I just learned and heard about the story this year, I think The Giving Treeis a good text. It shows us how much friends do for us. They are willing to put their well beings on the line in order to help us. Although this is a good quality for a friend to have, if we are their friends, we must take this into account and not ask them to continuously hurt themselves to help us. If we continue to let them hurt themselves, we will lose them and the friendship will never be the same again.  — Danetta

This movie is about four best friends that are soon going to be separated for the summer. One of the friends is going to Rome, one to Mexico, one to her father’s house, and the other is staying in town to work. Even though they will all be so far away they have something that will keep them linked, a pair of jeans. Even though the girls are all different sizes these miracle jeans fit them all. As the summer progresses the jeans are passed from friend to friend, with word of wisdom or just funny stories to share. These jeans keep the girls linked through out the whole summer and make them become better friends in the end.

One reason I like it is that it is not only focused on the advantages surrounding friendship, but more so the negativity surrounding it.

I have liked Spongebob since I was a child. Although I am not a child anymore, I still feel emotionally attached to Spongebob. Spongebob has a lot of friends (both good and bad). Each friend can be compared to the other. For example, Squidward and Patrick are two very different types of friends. Although all of his friends are different, all of them help Spongebob to reach his goal in the Spongebob Squarepants movie. Without his friends, Spongebob would not have accomplished his goals.

Sex and the City is a television series about four women living together in New York City. It teaches its viewers a lesson on how necessary friends are to have in your life. In this tv show the group of friends brighten each other’s day. One aspect of this show that I think is very important to observe is the diversity among the groups of friends. Each of the characters are all very different but they compliment each other and are perfect friends. My favorite quote from Sex and the City is said by Carrie: “the most important thing in life is your family. There are days you love them, and others you don’t, but in the end they’re the people you always come home to. Sometimes it’s the family you’re born into, and sometimes it’s the one you make for yourself.” I love this quote because I think it is very true but also I am lucky enough to have both kind of family in my life, friends and family. My siblings are some of my best friends and my best friends are my family.

Four beautiful female New Yorkers gossip about their sex-lives (or lack thereof) and find new ways to deal with being a woman in the 90′s.  Who doesn’t love them! this was originally a book by Candace Bushnell, which was made into a TV series and then finally into two movies. It shows how we all need those friends who’ll be there for us through everything and will love us the most, yes even over clothes and shoes!

In this episode of Full House, Kimmy and DJ’s friendship is tested. DJ Tanner throws a surprise party for her best friend Kimmy; however, Kimmy decides to ditch out on the birthday activities in order to accompany her newly found older friends. In the end of the episode Kimmy realizes that these newly found friends are non-comparable to DJ and she apologizes to her best friend. This text interests me because the relationship between Dj and Kimmy is a unique one in that most of Dj’s family find Kimmy as obnoxious and annoying; however, DJ does not let that phase her as she continues to be a great friend to her. This episode also demonstrates the aspect of loyalty in friendship which I find especially intriguing.

I believe that Teen Titans is a great friendship text. Teen Titans is about a group of five friends who join together to fight crime. Although each friend has a different power, they all come together to create a unified and strong team. I think this is a good friendship text because it shows that even though you may not be like someone, you may still become great friends with them. I also like that this text shows friendship in a group instead of between only two people.

All of the posts from Teenager Posts (see below) show the different aspects of being a close friend. I feel they are important because they display a more modern view of friendship texts through electronic media, which is a new topic recently brought up in class. Through these new electronic media, a whole new level of friendship has begun.

This particular post reminds me of when I first came to college in the beginning of the year. I made new friends but it took time to feel like I could trust them with my secrets. It feels like you have reached a new level of your friendship with them and its such a great feeling to know that someone trusts you that much.

There are certain quirks and idiosyncrasies that good friends would make fun of you for. It’s not meant to be mean, but rather just in a playful and joking way. It’s a true sign of friendship when you feel like you can joke around at someone and know that they’re feelings wont be hurt. But instead they’ll laugh at themselves with you.

I know I can definitely relate to this one, especially since I’m really busy with tennis. I don’t have class with some of my close friends in my dorm so I may not see them all day, but when I finally get back at night they all run up to me and give me a big hug. We always catch up with each other and talk about anything that we may have missed out on that day. Another way this may relate is when I went home for break and hadn’t seen any of my friends from home for a while. It feels great when you finally see them and run up to them to give them a hug since it’s been so long.

In this episode of New Girl Nick and Schmitt celebrate their ten years of friendship and ten years of living together. Schmitt throws a large party for the celebration giving Nick few tasks for the preparation, for he has little faith in his ability to come through with commitments. At the party, Schmidt and Nick get into an argument about Schmidt’s lack of faith in Nick, and about the fact that their friendship is unequal. This text interests me because it displays the reasons for conflict within a friendship, as well as relates to previous texts we have read discussing friendship between unequals.

I love that you used the “Tinfinity” episode from new girl. I think it’s my favourite episode so far. I also loved that you used a single episode, rather than citing the entire series, it makes your annotation a lot more meaningful! — Aakash

Tolkein’s famous series is more suited to older audiences than the Hobbit is, and it is rife with friendship issues – how friendships stay together amidst chaos and despair, and how they serve to strengthen people’s resolve in the worst of times. However, it also contains lighthearted bits on friendship, reminding us that even in darker times, joy can be found in friendship. The relationships between different races and within them can also be analyzed, and perhaps compared to the different views on friendship across different cultures around the world.

Toy Story is an animated movie about a boy’s toys coming alive and going on adventures together. It taught me that a true friend will never give up on you and always be there to help no matter how big or small the problem is. This message is especially prevalent in the theme song “You’ve got a friend in me,” which discusses the importance of having a friend to help you through the rough times. The relationship between Woody and Buzz Light Year, the two main characters, is a very good example of a true friendship because both help each other out and risk their life for the other.

In this children’s movie, Andy’s toys find themselves lost a long way from home. Even though they are only helpless toys, they are all determined to get back to their friend Andy, regardless of the obstacles they will have to face along the way. The toys cannot imagine any other boy playing with them and calling them his toys. This movie shows children the association between loyalty and friendship, and how strong the bonds that form between friends really become.

I think the movie also shows just how much they are willing to risk for friendship. The toys risk their lives several times in the movie, and they are willing to sacrifice themselves for each-other, as well as to get back to Andy. I love how it also connects so perfectly to the Bill Wither’s song you posted. The friendship between Huck and Jim is very rare particularly because it is a friendship between a white boy and a run away slave. Throughout the novel, Huck risks his life numerous times to get Jim to freedom. At one point in the story he says he is “going to hell” for Jim because the friendship that he and Jim have is forbidden in his religion. Jim tells Huck that he is his best friend because of everything he is doing for him. Even though society tells Huck not to consider Jim his equal because he is black, Huck says at the end that he knew “Jim was white inside” which is his way of saying that Jim is his equal although and he is an exception to the black race. I chose this source because the topic of friendship and race really intrigues me.

No-brainer. The simplicity and loving nature of Calvin and Hobbes’ friendship is part and parcel with its profound, philosophical side that reveals itself subtly amidst childish comic relief. Their relationship is a unique one, as Hobbes is only visible in his animate form when Calvin communicates with him. He is shown simply as a stuffed animal when others are present/talking, despite the fact that he appears very real and alive otherwise – this reminds us of the vivid imaginations we had as children that allowed us to create fleshed-out characters in our minds to interact with and befriend.

I love that you included Calvin & Hobbes. I had it in my main set of annotations but I didn’t post it to this website – how could I forget?  Calvin & Hobbes is so unique because the fact that Hobbes is (almost) an imaginary friend, makes this seem like it is a friendship that Calvin has with himself. We always talk about friendships with other people, but seem to forget that it’s possible to have a healthy friendship and love for yourself.  — Aakash

The Outsiders is an American literary classic likely to have been read by all by the 10th grade. It is the story of a town divided. There is the upper-class kids known as “the Socials” and the poor lower class children defined by their trademark hairstyle “the Greasers.” The story revolves around a “Greaser” named Ponyboy who with his best friend Johnny are unfortunately forced into hiding. The book is a known for it’s portrayal of gang violence and family dysfunction, but in it can also been seen a strong sense of camaraderie and brotherhood between the Greasers. Most of the novel focuses on Johnny and Ponyboy’s relationship, but especially in some of the more emotional sense the relationship the gang has with one another is a great example of true friendship.

Withers emphasizes that true friends are always willing to make the extra effort necessary to assist the people they care deeply about. This text is important because it establishes that true friendship is deeper than merely spending time with another person; it is more so about going through the challenges of life with a support system behind you.

In this song, friendship is defined as a bond between two people that is formed because one person sees that the other is in need of some kind of help. It is explained that the person offers their assistance to the other, and by doing so the two become friends. It is also expressed that one friend does not mind helping the other because, soon enough, he will need his friend’s help when a problem arises in his own life. I think this characteristic of friendship is a very important one to highlight: Not only do friends help one another, but they not mind doing so, and they have no doubt that if the situation were reversed their friend would not hesitate to help them as well.

Every song by Bill Withers has a special place in my heart. That man is a legend. Your description of the song is interesting because the line: “one friend does not mind helping the other because, soon enough, he will need his friend’s help when a problem arises in his own life.” makes it seem like the aid he is giving to the other person is not selfless. He expects the other person to be there for him. Is he helping his friend because he needs someone to have his back? Or is he helping his friend because he wants to? It reminds me of this video. — Aakash

Bill Withers cuts right to the core of me.  To provide my own answer to the questions you bring up in the annotation, I think Withers defines a true friendship by showing that the help he gives is not entirely selfless. If it were, it wouldn’t be friendship – it would be philanthropy. At the beginning of this movie, Dorothy, the Scarecrow, the Tinman, and the Lion do not know each other at all. However, they discover that they all have a common interest of finding their way to the Wizard of Oz. They all decide to take the journey together and, along the way, run into obstacles that force them to bond and connect with one another. Here, we see that friendships do not always form just because of common interests, but some form of a necessity for a bond between the people needs to arise in order for them to realize they can become close to and trust one another.
